jtran454

The journalists in Belarus were convicted of violating public order. They violated the public order by covering a protest against the authoritarian president, Alexander Lukashenko. The two were sentenced for two years.

The author uses family ties in order to make the reader have a stronger connection towards the two journalists. "Strong, smiling, and saying goodbye to their loved ones through bars." Despite being behind bars, the two have no regrets regarding the protest. The author first used the family in order to establish that they are still people and make the reader feel bad for the prisoners. It was later implied how strong these women are and how they wanted to continue on with the protest despite the consequences.
