Journalists have always been under fire in their occupation, as many don't like people acknowledging their corrupt systems to the public. However, recently more than ever, journalists are being killed and disappearing from the countries they go to visit. Specifically, Mexico has become the most dangerous country for journalists in 2019, where 12 journalists have been killed in the past year alone. Some deaths are of unknown causes, but assumed to be personal assassinations on journalists with case sensitive information. Even though many journalists seek protection from the Mexican government, Carrie Khan, a Latin american NPR interviewee states "In late August, a reporter in central Mexico state was found stabbed to death in his home" (Khan). With the government in violent disarray, many cases of murder towards journalists go unpunished. The Mexican government must stabilize itself to help journalists and keep them safe for freedom and democracy to prevail.
