Journalism and Misinformation

Cora Raub

"The global investigative journalism community may be facing its toughest challenges yet...We’ve got our work cut out for us." As many people could assume, with all the fake news swarming the media and slowly becoming part of our everyday lives, journalists are working extra hard to provide us with authentic news, which can lead to distrusting different sources. "In the United States, there is a declining public trust in traditional journalism...The percentage saying they had a great deal or fair amount of trust dropped from 53 percent in 1997 to 32 percent in 2016." People are constantly wondering if they should trust these news sources, since sometimes the news we get isn't true. This poses a problem for journalists as their job is to inform the public. One thing that has needs to be emphasised is to "encourage independent, professional journalism." We need to focus on supporting news sources and journalists that provide us with information that is true, and to focus on providing news that isn't misinforming others.
