Journalism Focus in 2021: Syndemic

In the post of NeimanLab’s Predictions for Journalism 2021, Candis Callison, an associate professor in the School of Journalism, Writing, and Media at the University of British Columbia, firmly stated that journalism for this pandemic era should be different from what it did in the previous era. During the pandemic, Covid-19 has greatly impacted our society over the country including extremely high death rates, economical-crisis, and climate changes. However, Callison says that future journalism shifts its focus on reporting this pandemic crisis as a syndemic with a correlation between crucial factors such as “politically marginalized, economically disadvantaged, and racialized communities." She and her co-author Mary Lynn Young proposes that “a systems journalism approach enables journalists to play a dynamic role in amplifying histories, contexts, and diverse voices in order to shed light on the interaction, roles, and responsibilities of systems and institutions.”
