Journalist shifts focus to #metoo movement in India after sharing her own experience

Priya Ramani, an accomplished journalist in India, has been writing and editing for 30 years. Although the harassment she faced from another newspaper editor occurred early in her career, his recent loss in a defamation case against him brought her accusation to light. Ms. Ramani’s reporting on her own experiences put her career at risk, for the benefit of bringing justice to the situation, and awareness to several other women’s stories. She “identified Mr. Akbar, then a minister of state in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet, as someone who had harassed her in 1993.” This callout was necessary to punish for his misconduct, and also to reignite the #metoo movement. The women who speak on their experiences publicly motivate others to seek the justice their cases deserve.
