“Welcome! We are the Gee family, just your “average” family working from all around the world as Family Travel Journalists!” Courtesy of the Bucket List Family ( https://www.thebucketlistfamily.com/about )
When it comes to journalism, most journalists are in the wild of their own community, but when it comes to this particular family, their “wild” is the entirety of the world.
The Bucket List Family is a cute family of 5, a mother, father, daughter, and two sons.
Garrett, the father, was once a student-athlete at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He invented his own app his freshman year of college with a team of people behind him, and was successful. He then sold the app to Snapchat. After a short time, he then dropped out of traditional education at BYU, and decided to take on the world, quite literally) with the love of his life. He is now the person who focuses mostly on the creative aspect of the journalism side of his family, with all his video and photo work, along with the editing that comes with that.
Jessica, the mother, who was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, moved across the Atlantic sea to Russia to serve a mission for the Mormon Church. It was there, in Vladivostok, Russia, where Garrett and JEssica originally met, but they didn’t date until they happened to be at BYU together. Jessica focuses on the social media and public relations side, which includes business deals and sponsorships.
Then last but not least are the three kids, Dorothy, Manilla, and Calihan. Dorothy is the oldest child, and currently the only girl. Dorothy left on her traveling adventure at age 2, and had been to 65 countries before the young age of 5. Manilla is the middle child, who left on this crazy journey at roughly 10 months old. And lastly, Calihan is the baby, just over 1, and has already visited 25 countries.
If you didn’t notice, all the 5 people in the family have a name that consists of 7 letters. Garrett and Jessica didn’t date because of that, but they decided to keep the trend going with each child. A fun little family tradition that they can keep in their back pocket.
Overall, this family is not like a traditional family, where they live in a single spot, but a family that invites adventure, and documents their journey on a multitude of different platforms, consisting of Instagram, YouTube, and their Blog.
When it comes to journalism, we typically think of our every day news outlets such as CNN, MSNBC, or FOX, however there is a whole world of journalism that is overlooked, and I think the bucket list family is a great way to discover the world of travel and family journalism.
