Journalists under Attack

Rana Ayyub, an Indian journalist and opinion columnist in The Washington Post, wrote an article in February 2021 regarding the “pressures and intimidation” of journalists in India due to their criticisms of the Indian government. In this article, she not only goes into detail about how the media alters the representation of protestors but also real-life examples of journalists and news reporters who have been pressures to quit or faced repercussions from voicing their opinions. By using words such as “lapdog media”, “pliable anchors”, and “anti-national”, Ayyub amplifies the constant resistance that journalists face in talking about the truth. Mainstream media has the power to warp stories and there should be protection for those new reporters or journalists that petition a different argument.
