Let's Hear It From The People In the Back

I loved the article by Tonya Mosley in NiemanLab. She predicts “The neutrality vs. objectivity game ends” for journalism in 2020. I’m not sure if she predicted this before the current Black Lives Matter movement or not, but if she did, bravo to her for predicting 2020 was the year we might actually see change in our race relations department.

She discusses the discrimination she and other black journalists have faced, being doubted whether or not they will be able to remain neutral in cases and show both sides. Mosley says, “Reporters can’t be objective if they are neutral….Neutrality tries and fails to correct the real biases and prejudices of the journalist, which is impossible to do.”

I don’t think news sources should always demonstrate both sides. We need to hear objective, not neutral points of view in our reporting, and especially those from black reporters.
