Making The Best of Twitter in Journalism

Fiona Hendley

The relationship between Twitter and the media is precarious at best. Many news sources reference Twitter all too often when documenting serious events. These references are easily muddled by misinformation and bias instead of fact. This relationship results in a loop that is to the detriment of both social media platforms and journalism. That being said, the relationship is unlikely to end. As Andrew Clappison points out in an article directed towards legitimate sources hailing from Twitter, there are ways to help ensure the correct information is relayed to journalists. Clappison points out that “establishing mutual trust and credibility is the foundation for most good working relationships.” In his article, Clappison details multiple effective ways to build relationships with journalists, explaining that there is a need for both

sides (social media and the news) to work together to get the best information possible. While professors Logan

Molyneux and Shannon McGregor support the idea that “in 2020 journalists must think twice before turning to Twitter,” Clappison offers a more positive outlook when pointing out that since Twitter is such a prominent source, we might as well use make the most of it.
