Mass Protests in the Arab Spring

Arab Spring Uprisings, as they became known, began in December 2010 when police seized the fruit stand of Mohamed Bouazizi in Tunisia. Bouazizi set himself on fire in protest in front of a government building. This was the beginning of mass protests against the government that led to the president fleeing the country in January 2011. These pro-democracy protests spread across several predominantly Muslim countries. In Libya and Syria, the protests led to civil war. The “climax of the Libyan rebel efforts came on August 22 when they took control of the capital.” After the leader Gadhafi was killed, the war began to conclude. These uprisings across various countries reflected frustration with the current government and at the conclusion, power shifts occurred.
