Misinformation in Media

Gen z and Millennials growing up with social media and around the clock access to any and all news surely plays an effect in the way we receive our news. There has never really been an filter to the internet that controls whether or not information is true, anyone can post anything without a fact check. In an article by Shaydany Urbani and Nancy Watzman, multiple accounts of times when misinformation damaged someones reputation were discussed. For example conspiracy theories about Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer appeared on Facebook regarding dominion voting systems in foreign countries. “Again and again, we found that the most damaging misinformation narratives started as local rumors, memes, and misleading photos — repackaged and reshared across the country.” The need to regulate and control the misinformation on social media is a must especially with even greater technological advances to come in the future.
