Jane Mayer is an investigative journalist for The New Yorker and has been for over 20 decades, a career in which she has written about the dubious surveillance system in the United States and the government sanctioned persecution of whistleblowers. In a portion of one of her most recent articles concerning republican and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s assertion that he supported former President Trump’s impeachment, Mayer mentions that “McConnell made clear to his Republican colleagues that he regarded impeachment as a matter of individual conscience, not one of party loyalty.” With Mayer’s inclusion of this information, it is clear that McConnell hopes to slash the intense association that many seem to make between each and every action of a politician and party affiliation.
