Due to the incidents such as the misinformation campaign described in my last post, the major social media websites and applications need to step up and counter this. While this incident didn’t really harm anybody, when it comes to fake news it’s a slippery slope. The algorithms used on modern day social media tend to only show articles and viewpoints that the user would agree with. This spirals the user down a hole and effectively only shows them what they believe in, no matter the validity or correctness of the content. If there was a way to show unbiased content, where the user could see both sides, it would weak the strength and toxic allure of fake news. One possible solution to fix this problem would be to add tags on every post that was fake news or disinformation, in order to warn users before accessing that specific content. Twitter has already been doing this in order to stop politicians from making “premature claims of victory.”
