Music and Government

There are many types of music and there are also hundreds of artists out there; however, not many artists use their music to talk about the world and, more specifically, the government. There is one type of music that is extremely vocal about the government and society. That group is called Punk Rock. Some bands of this genre include Sex Pistols, Misfits, Blink-182, Dead Kennedys, and Green Day. The article “Music as Political Protest and Punk Rock”, talks about the beginnings of Punk Rock and what it stands for, and eventually changing in the 1990s to become more left-leaning politically. “The way that the 1970s punk bands fought against passivity toward racial and economic injustices, the riot grrrl movement fought against the passivity toward the blatant sexism that existed in the Punk Rock culture as well as mainstream culture. This became the second wave of political activism in punk,” writes the author. Punk is one of the most aggressive sub-genres of music, not just in the music, but in how the people of this culture act as well. Punk music started out defying the government and societal norms and will continue to do so.
