Nelson Mandela Death

Nelson Mandela was a civil rights activist, who became South Africa’s first black president. Mandela, and many others, peacefully protested white rule in South Africa. He “spent 27 years in prison for political offenses”. Mandela was released from prison in 1990 and shared a Nobel Peace Prize with former South African president, Frederik W. de Klerk. Klerk released Mandel in 1990, and “Mandela succeeded de Klerk in office”, serving from 1994 to 1999. Unfortunately, Nelson Mandela died on December 5, 2013, at the age of 95. His death was broadcasted worldwide, and “he was internationally praised as a peacemaker, human rights activist, and freedom fighter”. After ten days of mourning, Mandela was given a funeral in his hometown of Qunu. 4,500 people attended the service. This included “African and world leaders, celebrities, and members of Mandela’s ruling African National Congress”. His legacy was honored.
