Neutrality vs Objectivity

Staying unbiased when covering news stories can be quite challenging. Based upon past experiences and personal beliefs, a reporters take on a story may be different than the next. Although this bias is capable from all races, people of color believe that they are being constantly criticized and questioned on if they can handle a story without being biased. Tonya Mosley, a co-host of NPR's midday news show, states, "Trust me — every person of color in your newsroom has a story about how a manager questioned either their news judgment, their diction, or whether they could be neutral or objective." Mosley then goes on to talk about a previous time where she was questioned on her ability to cover a story over the shooting of a man of color by a white cop. Mosley gives suggestions for improving these issues within the journalism field with the ultimate idea of making news reporters more diversified so different views aren't seen as "biased".
