News Feeds: FOX News vs CNN vs Apple News Apps Part 3

This is the last review of the rhetorical choices main news apps use to appeal and attract their audiences. In the first post, we discussed the use of the FOX News app and how its design and constant page updates helps its users stay in touch with current events. The second post told how the CNN app has easier navigation and the ability to search, providing better mobility and less frustration when wanting to find specific news quicker. Notably, both apps use the strategy of pathos to connect with the emotions and values of their audience. FOX, being more conservative, appeals to those on the right more than those on the left, while CNN, on the other hand, is more left leaning and appeals to those who are mostly liberal in thinking. This post will examine how Apple News chooses to use a different tactic to approach its audience by using more than pathos.

Unlike FOX News and CNN, Apple News does not appeal to one kind of audience.

International New York Times reported, “Apple said there are as many people reading traditionally leftleaning publications as traditionally rightleaning publications on Apple News.” When I opened the app, it gave me eight stories from different news sources and on different topics. There were four from conservative websites and four from liberal websites. It provided a tracking map of the COVID-19 outbreak, world coverage, national coverage, and provided the option to add local news. By not relying on pathos, Apple News depends more on logos (statistics, studies, comparisons, analogs) and ethos (credible sources and delivery) to appeal to their audience. In addition, the function and easy use adds to the experience on the app.

The app provides a wide range of channels, topics, and stories to choose from, including politics, entertainment, business, food, and sports. Along with this, it also provides the ability to search for articles on any chosen topic. Because of this feature, Apple provides a wider range of information that is not limited to a certain demographic with the hopes of not giving false data. In an article titled “Apple News's Radical Approach,” it states that the company “prioritizes accuracy over speed.” Other features include saved stories, news and magazines, coverage for the 2020 election, COVID-19, and a history for going back to re-read a story from any point in time.

In conclusion, the main difference between the three news apps is that CNN and FOX News used their headlines to generate pathos, while Apple News provided logos and ethos along with pathos to ensure the reader believed they could trust them and would come back to Apple as their source for news.
