A service that is massively utilized every single day is Google, the preferred search engine for a ton of people. Among their services includes a news feed. Upon accessing the feed, Google beings using algorithms meant to figure out what type of news is relevant to the user. This allows for increased control for what kind of news an individual has access to and enables them access to topics relevant to them. As an example, I am allowing a glimpse of my own news feed for better understanding.
Because of my interest in music and keeping up with Christian Bale, Google already knows what articles I'm interested in and the content I want to see. To quote my paper Hidden In Plain Sight, "I believe it is important for these companies to be more transparent on the way they collect information on individuals and allow users to have more control over just how much information they are giving out."
Despite the way my information is collected and used in an algorithm, it is pretty convenient that the content I care about shows up in a way that is easy for me to access.
