News site Home Page Comparison

These are the homepages for CNN News and BBC News on June 26, 2020. When comparing these two big new sites, I immediately noticed that CNN News has fewer images than BBC News. This puts BBC News in a better position in drawing viewers’ attention. Images and video are important visual elements since viewers tend to notice the images first, then words. Just by looking at the images, viewers can decide which stories they want to learn first. Another thing I noticed is that CNN News groups story titles in sections. By looking at the layout, I’ve already given up on clicking into one of the titles. As a viewer, I choose to avoid the need to read each title one by one and decide if I’m interested in one. The problem for the CNN News homepage is that it is poorly structured and contains too many words that are close to each other. On the other hand, BBC News did a great job by sectioning each story apart from another for readability and clarity. I also like the fact BBC News uses short and concise titles from its stories. For example, one of the titles from BBC News is “US has ‘serious problem’ with virus, says Fauci,” it is short and straight to the point. One story title from CNN News is “US records highest one-day infection total. Pence says things are going well”, it is long and in small font size. Between these two news sites, BBC News did a better job presenting its content to viewers by using concise story titles and a clean website layout.
