It is no secret that so-called “fake news” has taken over journalism in the past decades. From social media to sensationalist tabloids, the ethics of good-faith journalism are far from commonplace. The Daily Tar Heel seeks to combat the proliferation of fake news by revamping the way that news is spread. They claim that the “Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics” should be taught to every journalist when they begin to produce content in order to ensure that a shared ethical code can once again hold the media together. The North Carolina newspaper also argues that opinion articles should be clearly labeled so that consumers do not get confused on which articles are factual and which are opinionated.
