"Nightcrawler" and the ethics of journalism

cecheverria11

Jake Gyllenhaal takes the role of Louis Bloom, a freelance cameraman looking to hit it big as a part of Los Angeles' crime journalism collective. The gruesome nature of the footage he captures on camera combined with Louis' sketchy reporting methods shows a darker side of journalism. The ethical issues of the world he is involved in are highlighted throughout the movie as seen with Louis' development as a character: "Why you pursue something is as important as what you pursue." Nightcrawler gives thought-provoking insight on the contrasts between fiction and real-life with dialogue from the character Nina, a TV news reporter who helps Louis throughout the movie. She is able to provide information on journalistic techniques often used in real news broadcasts. I highly recommend Nightcrawler to anybody looking to experience something they never have before in a film.
