The political scene in Allen is changing dramatically for the first time in over 20 years. Last year Allen residences voted and approved term limits for our current mayor and city council. Because of this, Allen's mayor of 23 years, Steve Terrell, has stepped down as mayor so he can run for county commissioner. His absence is being felt since he has helped Allen grow from a small city to a city of over 100,000 people. In the article, "Does a City Need a Mayor" written by Alan Ehrenhalt, he states that "When you add it all up, though, it seems fair to conclude that the original idea of city-manager government, developed by Richard Childs in the early 20th century as a progressive solution to urban problems, has not traveled very well to the 21st". This means that maybe Allen doesn't need a mayor after all and we can continue to grow as a community.
