Non-Profit is the Future

jwagley1

As tensions rise in the commercial media structure, non-profit models are becoming ideal. Alfred Hermida and Mary Lynn Young are both associate professors of journalism at the University of British Columbia. They investigated that many outlets are trying to convert to a non-profit model and that it is gaining popularity up north in Canada. Hermida and Lynn state that "while the work of journalists has value to society, anyone can enjoy these benefits without having to pay for it, being interested in it, or even being aware of it." This policy change should be a good standard for those to follow. The key to journalism is not the sale, but for the information to be successful, the media needs to gain the trust of its viewers and gain back their engagement.
