Obama Wins Election

In November of 2008, Barack Obama became the 44th and the first African American president of the United States. Running alongside him was fellow democratic nominee, Joe Biden. Together, they defeated “the Republican ticket of Arizona Sen. John McCain and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin”. They easily won both the electoral and popular votes. Obama’s presidency was celebrated as a “sign of light for the nation in the midst of the biggest financial downturn since the Great Depression”. In addition, “his victory was also cited as a positive step to racial equality and a continuation of the civil rights movement legacy”. HIs campaign slogans spread the message of hope and belief. In 2012, Obama and Biden were re-elected, “defeating former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan”.
