Paying for News

Writer's picture: Savannah Campbell Savannah Campbell

Nowadays most online news sites ask their audience to pay for a subscription. Some do, but others find paying for news that they could get on another site for free to be a waste of money and time. In the article "Predictions for Journalism 2020" by NiemanLab, there is a blurb titled "Respect the non-paying Audience" by Don Day, In which Day states “I was floored when a publisher said they hit their non-member email list with a whopping 15 promotional come-ons in an average month.” This goes to show that most audiences would rather not pay to prove a loyalty or to receive news, and if those journalistic sites wish to continue, they will have to re look at their stance on subscriptions.
