Podcasting: A New Trend Influencing Journalism

Podcasting is taking journalism to a new height of broadcasting glory. The New York Times’ ‘The Daily,’ NPR’s ‘Up First,’ The Economist’s ‘The Intelligence,’ are some of the daily news podcasts gaining extensive number of digital audiences. Thanks to these news podcasts, people do not have to save their time anymore for watching news on TV. Anyone with internet access can download any shows anytime they want to listen to. The word “Podcast” is a combination of two words, “iPod” and “broadcast,” proposed by Ben Hammersley, British journalist of BBC. Apple’s support for podcasting to iPod is also related to the origin of its name. Listening to podcasts requires searching and downloading audio files from a podcasting platform or website for free, widely available on internet or through different apps, to any personal device like computer, smartphone. In addition, individuals can subscribe to any interesting show with podcast apps like Spotify, Pocket Casts, Radio Public on their phones to listen to any episode of their desired show whenever they want. According to Podnews, “Tom Webster, Senior Vice President of Edison Research, the leading podcast research company in the world, announced that, 75% of US population say they are familiar with podcasting, that is equivalent of 212 million people.” Podcasting is a new form of journalism. With their innovative storylines, commentaries, news that are unable to make headlines on TV or other news outlets, podcasts are becoming increasingly popular among young generation.
