Presumptive information vs Confirmatory information

To test for the presence of drugs, Forensic scientists use two different types of drug tests: presumptive tests, and confirmatory tests. Presumptive tests are the fast and cheap ways to determine if a drug is present or not. A confirmatory test then takes a longer and more expensive route to determine what type of drug is present, or if the presumptive test was wrong in determining the presence of a drug.

These types of tests are similar to the way that people receive information and news. Social media is like the presumptive test. It is a fast and easy way to get out information. And actual news websites can be the confirmatory tests in this analogy as they contain the larger articles with more details about a certain situation. For example, the CNN and Fox News Instagram pages both get out information by posting a picture of an event and then adding a caption or quote to that picture. These social media accounts do not contain all the details of a certain event, but they still let people know what is going on. When someone then travels to CNN.com or Foxnews.com they can find full articles that contain all the details over the situation they found out about on social media. And if some information is false the source prints a redaction. According to Jason riddle from the Arkansas Journal of Social Change and Public Service, “retractions are printed to gain (or regain) the trust of followers.” Retractions let people know that information they saw was false and that they shouldn’t believe it.
