While sometimes fake news is easy to spot – such as social media hoaxes – other times it can cause even world leaders to fall prey to it. After a fake news story trended on Twitter, a tense public discussion between defense ministers occurred. “The article misidentified Moshe Ya’alon as the Israeli defense minister” who had resigned previously and also contained various grammatical errors. Despite these obvious warning signs, “Pakistan’s defense minister, Khawaja Mohammad Asif, apparently read the article as a genuine threat of a pre-emptive nuclear strike”. He proceeded to Twitter and also claimed Pakistan as a “nuclear state.” This is a prime example of how detrimental fake news can be to ignorant people – world leaders or not.
