Protecting the Press: Italy’s Eroded Relationship Between the Government and Press

ckelly397

A group of Sicilian prosecutors has been investigating Non-governmental organizations and charities for involvement in human trafficking in the past months. An Italian newspaper named Domani has covered the story and has maintained contact with sources within the ranks of Italian prosecutors. Since the story has been published, it was revealed that Italian journalists had their phones wiretapped by magistrates who recorded “dozens of conversations between at least seven reporters and their sources.” This is a clear violation of journalistic rights, but the Italian press is not protected by law, so the wiretapping is being treated just like any privacy breach. This is a dangerous precedent for the Italian government to set, and if journalists aren’t careful, details of private conversations may come back to harm them in the future.
