Relevant News or United States Bubble?

With so many news sources, it is only natural to get bogged down in the midst of breaking news headlines. I found it interesting to see how news sources present themselves at first glance on iPhone Applications.

I decided to look at CNN (https://www.cnn.com/us), one of the most trusted news sources among the liberal political group. When one first clicks on the app, there is an option to get news about the United States, or Global news. I found this interesting, as people often rely on the news to get all their information; if they choose to only get the news of the United States, they build a “bubble” around themselves. In contrast, if they choose international news, they may miss imperative news that is more applicable to them, if they live in the United States.

CNN takes this approach for one reason, and this is outlined in the very first sentence that appears on the screen: “Get all the news most relevant to you.” I find this sentence extremely interesting, as they are using data science to filter out news so the user gets only the news that the app thinks they want to see.

The use of complex technology when delivering the news has both good and bad implications, and is a debate that evolves along with the advancement of technology. While it is good to read news relevant to you, as it keeps your attention and gives you relevant news, it may also prevent users from seeing vital information.

Overall, CNN does a great job of providing the news.

Even so, “relevance” and “news” are two words that are hard to mix.
