Representing Marginalized Groups

When writing about under-represented groups, it is essential that journalists are mindful of the impact of their words. This article poses 5 questions all journalists should ask themselves before publishing work about a marginalized group. It is beyond necessary that these writers understand that they have "the power to shape perceptions, influence public opinions and change the status quo". They must remain conscious of the intent behind their words, how it reflects the community they are reporting on, and the stereotypes that are present about the community. People in these groups such as immigrants, people of color, LGBT+ individuals, impoverished people, and members of nonwestern religions, are used to being battered constantly in the news. If it is the goal of a journalist to do right by these groups, they must consider every detail of how these groups have been portrayed and how that juxtaposes with the truth. They must be able to take criticism and learn from the group with poise and compassion. Good journalism takes more than just good intentions.
