Rhetorical Strategies of Fake News

rpayberah1

While some fake news is accidental, there are instances in which fake news is purposefully manufactured. As seen in the examples on https://libguides.geneseo.edu/newsliteracy/decoding-rhetoric , fake news will usually use very shocking and eye catching buzz words in the headlines. In addition these buzz words are usually polarizing and often give away the author's opinion very clearly with just one word. One of the examples used in the above website is using the headline, "He is served time in prison" vs. the headline, "He is an ex-con". The latter example packs more of a punch in the eyes of the viewer, where as the former headline is a more lighter way of putting it. Either of these headlines could be used to garner the attention of the author's target audience.
