Social Media and "Fake News"

*Please excuse the language*. Social media is becoming the main source of local and world news information for younger generations. Sites like Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok are often where young people (15-30yr olds) are getting the bulk of their information, even though it is not always completely credible. In the picture above, for example, a woman named Zoe Sturges rallies at a Black Lives Matter protest and gets arrested for handing out a flower to a policeman- or so it seems that is the only reason. This Instagram post was widely circulated about a week ago, and the caption along with the photos make her story seem both very short and completely unjust. If someone on social media were to see this post alone, they would likely be struck with indignation at such an act of injustice towards an innocent woman. Instagram’s visual rhetoric makes it very easy to skim news headlines connected to pictures, but often the whole story is not visible.
