The spotlight team has to decide between publishing the article with only the evidence incriminating the Cardinal and the first Priest or wait for the confirmation on the seventy other ones. They were told "[they needed] the institution, not the individual priests" and they were given six weeks. Enough time to let the dust settle, so to speak, with the 9/11 disaster.
Pressured from all sides to not get the story told, the five members of the spotlight team got the article published and received many calls from victims after reading the article who were empowered by to step up and say something. This film does a great job of showing the struggles of wanting to let the public know about the danger they faced, while also balancing the strength of their argument so as not to get buried under the scrutiny of their enemies.
