Martin Schoeller is one of the most iconic photojournalists of our time. His many projects focus on close-up portraits, all with a story to be told. My first introduction to Schoeller was through his collection “Survivors” through National Geographic. This series shows close-up portraits of Holocaust survivors. He speaks about where they were during the Holocaust and includes life advice from the survivor. My favorite is of Hannah Goslar-Pick who was a neighbor and close friend to Anne Frank. She says “All people are created in the image of God. We are all the same. Regardless of color or religion, we should live in peace together. It is very hard, I know, but we should try harder to get along.” The people photographed faced extreme tragedy, but all of them have a positive, inspiring outlook on the way the world should be.
