Take a moment

To get more people to learn more about and read the news, Sara Marshall suggests taking advantage of “news moments.” A study from the Reuters Institute’s Digital News Report 2019 stated that “young people have four key moments of news consumption.” These four moments are dedicated moments, a moment of the update, time fillers, and intercepted moments. Each moment is accompanied by a specific mindset that shows the state the reader is in. The dedicated moment is a specific time set aside for news and readers are more focused and introspective. While a moment of update is quick, to catch up, something readers feel like they have to do. Time-fillers are moments of reading while doing something else, it’s more to distract and kill time. Finally intercepted moments are like popups that can happen any time, readers are passive at that moment. Taking advantage of these news moments with the right stories can get more people consuming the news.
