It is always good to get an idea on how the world reacts and what it says in regards to news. The explorer, Alexander von Humboldt once said, “The most dangerous worldview is the view of those who have never looked at the world.” In the previous blog post, I discussed the differences between local and major newspapers. Continuing this thought regarding the differences between papers, how do papers in the U.S. differentiate from other countries? This post will look at those newspapers considered to be in the top ten currently in circulation in the U.S. and compare them to the headlines around the globe to see if there is a contrast.
When comparing papers from the United States to major global newspapers, one thing was shocking, there is little to no difference. Looking at The Guardian (UK), China Daily (China), The Sydney Morning Herald (Australia), The Asahi Shimbun (Japan), The West Australian (Australia), and The New Indian Express (India), there are more similarities than differences. The structure of headlines are nearly all the same, with all showing the same concern for their audiences, and all reporting how their leaders and their country are being affected by the Covid-19 outbreak (exception being The West Australian, which reported the changing of the tide and the appropriate days for surfing). Instead of examining the differences, let us discuss the similarities.
The one main parallel between the papers is their concern for people generally, not just those in their country but in other countries as well. The New York Times has reported the trying times of Britain, while Britain has showed sympathy towards America and concern for China, China tells of the possible incoming aid from Russia, and India relates the bad news coming from Asia. It is as if all eyes are on the other, waiting for the next report at home and abroad. It is interesting to see how countries are reporting stories from the U.S. and other nations in their front-page news. It is as if the world is holding its breath, watching and waiting for the next story, the next announcement, whether good or bad, to see how to react. Each news article is reporting on the strategies of other nations to see how their failure or success has affected them. There is so much going on in the world that it is good for people to stay aware of it.
