Journalism is a very important resource and tool in society. It allows readers to obtain information about what is going on in their country, as well as what is going on around the world. In order to gather information about other areas, many news organizations used what is called “parachute journalism,” which is where a journalist is dropped off in a random area and is asked to gather information as quickly as possible and then report on it. This form of journalism is beneficial in getting out information quickly, but that is about the only good thing about it. Kevin Grant from NeimanLab said that parachute journalism is “likely to present a distorted picture back to the community being covered, potentially inflaming existing fault lines within the community, while amplifying stereotypes and misconceptions to a larger audience.” This is the reason that many news outlets and organizations decided to drop this process that was used so widely before. Now organizations are focusing on having people that live in the community that is being researched report on the subject rather than a foreigner that knows nothing about the area.
