Journalism, as a profession, is on a downhill climb. Many journalists are finding themselves in jobs that don’t provide good benefits, if any, or temporary jobs (whether they know it or not), and that is only if they are lucky enough to have not yet been laid off. Rachel Glickhouse explained, “It’s not just that journalists are losing their jobs. It’s also the journalists forced to work freelance, part-time, as contractors, or in temporary fellowships as they struggle to find or stay in staff positions that offer stability and health benefits.” The journalists that love their work enough to be willing to put up with these poor conditions will take the jobs, making other journalists that maybe can’t afford these things turn away from their careers and onto a new path. The decline will only continue in the future.
