The Demise of Parachute Journalism

Updated: Feb 23, 2021

Parachute journalism is a method in which a journalist of a distant land travels to a small community in hopes of relaying their local stories, usually by connecting with a native journalist (who most likely won't be credited in the final product).

Fortunately, due to the aftereffects of the global pandemic hindering air travel and thus hindering this so called parachuting process, Kevin D. Grant argues in his recent article that collaborative journalism is now involving “partnerships, not parachutes.” Grant asserts that as of now, without the option of regularly scheduled travel, journalists must obtain their sources, specifically those stationed across states and countries, via online. The result? Journalists are prompted to cover stories relating to the happenings of their own local communities, rather than remote and intangible locales.
