While viewing Niemanlab's Predictions for 2021 website, Aaron Foley's article "Diversity Gains Haven't shown up in Local News" caught my eye.
Foley writes about his wishes for diversity to grow further than just big name news outlets. He explains, "digital outlets have made headway in diversifying their entry-level hires... the same can't be said for all the newsrooms outside New York City and Washington". Foley explains that the journalism industry was "too white, male, and straight", and 2020 was the year for the start of change. He hopes that throughout 2021, local news industries will "[see] community publications not as being less-than, but as fertile recruiting grounds for editors".
The journalism industry will become stronger with the more diversity and different opinions it will have in it. So, the hope is that 2021 will be welcoming diversity more than it ever has before.
