Journalism has changed and is continuing to change as years pass. Journalism is a way for our society to know what is going around us and in the world the magazines, newspapers, etc. Even though journalism has its advantages, it also has its disadvantage. Disadvantages of journalism are issues that could lead to its undoing. One example of an issue that can affect journalism is a capital shortage. Elizabeth Hansen and Jesse Holcomb stated that “There may not be enough philanthropic capital, even on the sidelines, to support the scope and depth of local news-gathering that our democracy requires.” Capital shortage is important because without the support the scope and depth of local news- gatherings, it can lead to spreading misinformation to the audience or using unreliable sources. Another issue that can lead to journalism’s downfall is that journalists can be left behind when the industry declines. Rachel Glickhouse clarified that “There are lots of efforts to bolster print and local media, but there aren’t many structures in place to support journalists struggling with job insecurity or job loss.” Without support, it can lead to journalists struggling to try and not to lose their jobs. Some journalists might end up losing their jobs due to this lack of support. Lastly, a disadvantage that can cause a downfall in journalism is that journalism can be hacked. John Keefe stated that “A group of hackers and law-enforcement officials ran a simulation of what an Election Day cyberattack might look like. One of the hackers first moves? Hacking trusted news websites and social media accounts, allowing the bad guys to spread false narratives quickly.” Hackers can change things and spread false information if they get access to those sources. There are many different drawbacks that can prevent journalism from advancing in the future.
