Everyone wants something and a lot of people are willing to lie to get the things they want, from wealth to fame, sometimes to extreme measures. The media is no exception. Going so far back as the days of Jack the Ripper, one James Kendrick spread fake news about missing persons on slow Sundays to raise sales, going so far as to claim murder of four women on a local city block. After a customer bought a copy of the paper, then complained that there was no such story. "The news vendor was sentenced to fourteen days in gaol, with hard labor." Unfortunately, it's not so easy to pin down things like this nowadays.
