The Future of Journalism: Advertisement and News Subscription

Updated: Feb 5, 2021

A book titled “The News Media: What Everyone Needs to Know” written by C.W. Anderson, Leonard Downie Jr, and Michael Schudson discussed the topic of history and the future of journalism. According to the authors, the change in the format of media not only affects the method of consuming information by users but also affects the method of revenue generation by journalism companies. For example, they said "the New York Times’s annual subscription revenue exceeded advertising revenue in 2013." This example shows that the correlation between an advertisement and newspaper companies is getting stronger. However, this change in revenue system makes a concern because the boundaries between the companies and advertising become increasingly blurred which could obscure the important quality of journalism: objectivity.
