The Issue with Breaking News on Social Media

David Goss

Social media has become one of the most common areas where news is broken and it can have its pros and cons. While it is relied on for being the site where a story is first broken, the accuracy of a report on social media is consistently in question. For example, in January, TMZ broke the tragic news of NBA legend Kobe Bryant being a part of the tragic helicopter crash that took multiple lives. It was one of the first news sources that broke the news, but they received a tremendous amount of backlash due to the fact that Bryant and the other victim's families were not notified of the deaths before TMZ posted their Tweet. Oliver Darcy of CNN included a quote from Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva who stated, "It would be extremely disrespectful to understand that your loved one ... perished and you learn about it from TMZ. That is just wholly inappropriate."
