The Magnitude of Disinformation

David Barroso

According to businessinsider.com "The top 100 fake news stories on Facebook in 2019 were viewed over 150 million times." This is concerning as it means that hundreds of millions of people are being exposed to fake news on social media platforms.

Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter allow anyone to post almost anything at any time. These platforms make it easy for trolls to spread false information. Within hours a simple misleading post could reach millions, and bad people are using this to their advantage in an attempt to mislead the public on certain events. With that being said, it is essential for social media users to be aware of this so that they can be on the lookout for fake news and avoid falling victim to misleading information.
