Journalist Ståle Grut opens the article stating the change in journalism from “the domain of intelligence agencies” to “digital open sources” for journalistic research. Open-source intelligence (OSINT) used to be reserved for intelligence communities, but has moved more into the mainstream. It’s composed of digital sources that can assist journalists in investigations, using creative and critical thinking. The OSINT community is still relatively small, but groups using this method have partnered with big news organizations like the New York Times and BBC. This year two guides were published on how to do OSINT journalism. More are expected to adopt these methods, as OSINT is used by more traditional journalistic institutions. OSINT levels the playing field, providing a valuable resource to small newsrooms as well as news giants. This new method of research marks a stark change in journalism as we enter the new decade.
