The Power of Headlines

Ashleigh Trout

The Newseum showcases a gallery of newspaper designs for those interested in comparing the graphic design of different issues. When browsing through the dozens of images present, the importance of a catchy headline quickly becomes apparent. With only a few seconds to catch the interest of someone subconsciously scanning the pages, you need something to draw potential readers closer. One way papers go about this is by adding large photos to the front of an issue, in order to draw in more readers. They may add images of current events or political figures, like the president or the ensuing pandemic. If using a text headline there are important factors that can go to build a good hook, like trigger words or words that cite emotion in the reader, or a call to action which encourages a sense of urgency among the audience.
