As if this isn't already a known fact, podcasting has become a huge trend in recent years. It isn't uncommon these days to see people listening to them while walking down the street or commuting to work or even while doing a few chores around the house. It's revolutionary in that anyone can listen and most importantly anyone can create. Joni Deutsch, author of "Podcasting unsilences the silent", discusses this form of creative media and the importance of protecting it from those who want to abuse the platform for recognition and financial gain.
Deutsch notes that as podcasts have grown in popularity, "commercialized, hyper-celebrity noise" has attempted to take over the platform effectively "drown[ing] out the diverse voices, perspectives, and stories that can and should call podcasting home." Podcasting is unique in that it's available to anyone. They are always free to stream, and as long as creators have access to a phone for recording and something to say they can contribute to the long list of unique stories that Deutsch and many listeners love hearing. Deutsch wants to preserve that and recommends ways that listeners can help.
First, "activate the community." according to Deutsch, despite the popularity of podcasting only 50% of people have actually listened to one. She suggests getting more people involved in the podcasting community to support the podcasts that make the platform so unique.
Second, " democratize the pod-public." This means teaching people how to build their own podcasts and ensuring that it stays accessible to everyone.
Last, "collaborate, partner, and get out there." Deutsch suggests the individuals who have podcasts or are aspiring creators should get involved in their community to not only build recognition of the channel but also share the stories of communities that people around the world might not get to hear. Basically, taking podcasting back to its roots.
Hopefully, by doing this, podcasts that project the voices that typically go unheard will continue to make an impact.
