The Predicted Fate of Journalism in 2020 (part 1)

gking7

Most media that is covered on the news is nationwide news unless you are specifically tuning into something meant for a local audience. The national news is fantastic at informing the entire public about a certain event (ex. the global pandemic of COVID-19), although most information is dependent on local news outlets. Elizabeth Hansen and Jesse Holcomb said, "There may not be enough philanthropic capital, even on the sidelines, to support the scope and depth of local news-gathering that our democracy requires." In simpler terms, this is explaining that local news isn't getting the same sort of funding that a nationwide news station would be getting. To understand the repercussions of the elimination of local news outlets, you can use the COVID-19 outbreak as an example. Statistics are being gathered across the globe, but the only way they can get that data is through local news otherwise the national news would have holes in their data.
